Seriously, What the Health?

Hey guys,
Ok so I know I’m not very consistent with this whole blogging thing. There are a lot of things I’d like to change about my site and well, to be quite honest I just don’t feel like I have the time/mental energy to do that right now. BUT I just heard something at work that I felt I HAD to post on here.
FYI I (currently) work on a research study through the medical school here in Springfield…but that has nothing to do with it except for the fact that I was there today picking up some papers and I ran into a girl who is a doula <–if you don’t know what that is…SO.COOL.! and I asked her how a birth she was working on recently went (side note she had to leave it to come do nutrition education at a local elementary school with me…not my choice, we were both volunteers yada yada…again, not the point). She told me that while she was gone the doctor ordered an emergency C-Section because he/she saw the babies heart rate drop. Now this would obviously be scary as sh*t if you were having your first baby and the doctor was like “oh hey the babies heart rate dropped and that makes me nervous so we’re gonna slice you open.” so obviously the parents agreed to it and the babies fine. THE POINT IS…the doula wasn’t there and she feels like if she had been she might have been able to talk to the parents…apparently it’s normal for the babies heart rate to drop a bit (it’s being squeezed preeeetty hard by the uterus) AND (here’s the kicker) it’s a somewhat common practice for doctors to do this to HURRY UP BIRTHS SO THEY CAN GET OUT OF THERE!! Now, I didn’t know any of this until about an hour ago and this could totally be speculation but the message I’m trying to get across here is that if you’re in a situation where you feel helpless and like your doctor is throwing a lot of medical jargon at you and you’re totally overwhelmed, please take a few deep breaths and remember, they’re really not that much smarter than the rest of us (trust me, I grade all their Nutrition Elective papers).
